At the end of the 19th century the archaeologist and palaeontologist Gorjanović-Kramberger found the remains of Neanderthals on a hill near Krapina. At this spot there is now located a Neanderthal museum, considered to be one of the most interesting evolutionary museums in the world and most popular museum in Croatia, along with a sculpture park representing a reconstruction of Neanderthals’ everyday life.
Built beside a lake, it looks like out of a fairy tale - there's even a drawbridge. The castle was built in the 13th century. A tour of the castle will take visitors past restored 19th-century furnishings bearing the castle's coat of arms, as well as centuries-old weapons, tapestries and portraits in the knight's room, hunting room and music salon.
Varaždin city still has the architecture and style for which it became known as the “capital of baroque”. Varaždin enjoyed its golden age during 17th and 18th centuries when it was the capital city of Croatia. The shining star of Varaždin is Renaissance-style castle, called Old town - Stari Grad. Today here stands a historical museum enjoying the status of UNESCO protected site.
