The Chernobyl disaster of April 26, 1986, was the most catastrophic nuclear accident of the 20th century. After the terrible explosion, those living close to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant were evacuated and a 30km exclusion zone was imposed around the damaged reactor.
Even though today - more than 30 years later - we have some better understanding of the event, scientists still have some research ahead to fully and comprehensively determine complete scale of radiation consequences. Story of Chernobyl isn’t of interest only to scholars; since 2011, when the area was opened to the public, a growing number of tourists visit exclusion zone every year.

One of the places most affected by the explosion is Pripyat, located in the north of the Kyiv region of Ukraine, only 2 km from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. It was a satellite city, founded in 1970 and growing in population, designated to accommodate power plant’s workers and their families as well as the scientist. After the explosion, citizens were evacuated, leaving their personal belongings behind. From then on, Pripyat stands frozen in time, overtaken by nature and wildlife, reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic postcard.

In two days you will spend in the exclusion zone, you’ll have hours to explore empty and overgrown streets of Pripyat. The whole time you will be accompanied by knowledgeable guides who will thoroughly explain what happened on the night of the explosion as well as give you the context and depth of that time period (Ukranian SSR) and the events that followed. You will also see DUGA, the secret military radar and huge mysterious factory Jupiter (there are only speculations of what was produced there). Finally, you will enter the power plant and have 3 hour long tour on the inside and see infamous AZ5 button, pushed too late by the workers of Reactor 4. To complete the experience you will have one night sleepover in the exclusion zone.

For the ones reading this and questioning the safety of this trip, we want to emphasise that those who will take the tour are exposed to a lower level of radiation than on a long-haul flight! On top of that you can borrow a dosimeter for free and you will get a dosimetric control at least 2 times a day. But it is as safe as traveling to any other country!
